When we were at a wedding a few weeks ago, David was given a man corsage. It was pinned on to his borrowed suit coat by a member of the bridal party and when we got home that night he unpinned the rose and put it on the top shelf of the refrigerator next to the alleged real maple syrup.

Time passes. Calendar pages turn. The rose stayed on the top shelf. That is, until this morning when I decided to put a dash of alleged real maple syrup in my oatmeal.

I know the first couple of days I thought to myself, “Wow, that rose really has some staying power.” Then I got so used to seeing the rose next to the syrup that I just quit thinking about it as a rose. It was more like just one more thing in the refrigerator that just didn’t satisfying my hunger.

Until today because I am mad that I have cholesterol issues and I am sick of oatmeal and I know that the alleged real maple syrup is really not going to be much of a change from the usual brown sugar and cinnamon combination and what I really hungry for is a glob of butter and two globs of chunky peanut butter on lightly browned toast and that is when I really stopped to think about the rose.

“What’s the deal with this rose?” I think that statement sums up my thoughts as I pick up the thoroughly chilled rose and take a sniff of it for the very first time in almost two weeks.

The rose wasn’t real. I have no idea what it was made from but it was the best looking not-silk and not-plastic kind of rose I had ever seen.

So I left it there. The alleged real maple syrup and the not real rose, together on their shelf. Neither of them requiring refrigeration yet both conducted themselves in a high maintenance manner. They can sit on the shelf and enjoy each others company. They deserve to be a couple for eternity. In the dark.

Hopefully the other things in the refrigerator will learn their lesson.

That is just too hilarious. When I got married the first time back in the stone ages, I insisted on using silk flowers "because I would be able to keep them forever." Egads. While I was clearing out my house after the DIVORCE, I decided that I no longer needed to keep these everlasting flowers for-freakin'-ever.

I've heard the fake flowers today are actually quite amazing. I've still yet to see a fake flower I thought was all that – or have I? hmmm… maybe I just didn't know.
